Make no mistake about it — this time of year, it’s hot outside. In fact, the Gatlinburg area (spitting distance from the Outdoor Rafting Adventures headquarters) averages a high of just under 90 degrees. But don’t sweat it, there are a few easy things you can do to beat the summer heat:

Stay hydrated

Water makes up more than half of your body weight, and you lose water every time you sweat, use the bathroom, or even breathe. With blistering temperatures, it’s important to up your water intake accordingly. Most doctors recommend six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day, but your needs will vary depending on height, weight, age, etc. Find a plan that works for you and stick to it.

Use sunscreen

This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people choose NOT to apply sunscreen. Whether you need SPF 15 or 150, go ahead and lather up. Give it time to dry, and be sure to reapply whenever you can. Here’s a surprising static for you: over the past 3 decades, more people have had skin cancer than ALL OTHER CANCERS COMBINED. Wearing sunscreen is the easiest, quickest, and most basic way to prevent sun-related skin diseases.

Wear the right clothes

Cotton is your best friend. When it gets this hot, you’ll need something with optimum insulation and air circulation. In general, cotton is much more breathable than polyster and other synthetic materials. Water will also soak into those cotton fibres and help keep you cool.
