The water flow on the Pigeon River is controlled by Walters Dam, a hydroelectric dam located in Haywood County just a few miles upstream of our launch area.
During the Summer (Mid-May through Mid-September), water is released from the dam on we call “guaranteed rafting days,” that is, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. It’s these releases that cause the river’s exhilarating Class III-IV rapids.

During the Spring and Fall, however, the dam does not offer guaranteed rafting days.
We still offer the opportunity to experience the river at a variety of water levels — everything from a calm, Class II float to thrilling, Class III-IV trips. The levels change daily, and we typically have trips departing 7 days a week.
The Smoky Mountains are more beautiful than ever in the Fall, and white water rafting is the most exciting and affordable way to explore them!
